Chaos before a calling

Monday, September 16, 2013

How do people go to bed at 10:00 pm? I mean, do those people exist? I guess we can't ask them, since it's now 10:26 and they are all in bed.

I've been trying for the past couple weeks to turn my night owl nature into that of a morning person.

It's hard.

But I will tell you that I have been so much more pleasant in the morning. When I actually wake up and have my time in the morning, I'm a different person.

Brian and I now have this rotating workout schedule in the morning. I get Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and he gets Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. (I obviously got the better end of the deal.) Sorry babe.

But that means that we each have from 6:00-7:30 on those mornings to workout. I went to Barre 3 this morning at 6:00 am which means that I woke up at 5:00. But it's so worth it. I did early morning Barre 3 workouts a lot when we had the foster babies, and I started back up again a couple weeks ago. It's going well. I may not be able to walk tomorrow, so we'll just play that ear.

I would love to run in the morning. Which would mean I would have to get up at 5:00 am again, so that I could be done by 6:00 when it's Brian's turn to work out. I mean, when did working out get so complicated?

So goes life with 3 kids I guess.

Things are busy here. Especially in my head. I have so many many things running around in there that I can't seem to sort them all out. That chaos usually comes before a calling {at least that's how it's worked for me in the past.} I guess we'll just have to see how it all plays out in the future.

That's all I've got tonight.....just a little crazy. At least it's a little crazy that I'm sorting out. I feel like I'm prepping for something. What? Who knows? {one of those things rolling around in my head maybe.....}

One of those days

Sunday, September 15, 2013

I swore I would not do this when I came home, but somehow today became one of those days.

I have so much on my mind. I wish I weren't thinking so much. I wish I were already in bed. I'm setting my alarm for 5:00 am (yes, you read that right.....5 am!). I have been getting up much earlier lately, and it has made a huge difference.

The week before we went to Summit, I was up before 6 am every morning. It gave me time to read my Bible, study, pray, workout, and I swear, I was a different person. It's very, very hard to turn a night owl into a morning person, but I am desperately trying. {all I do at night is waste time, honestly}

So tomorrow I have a Barre3 class at 6 am, but I really want to have a few minutes to do some Bible study before I have to leave, which means I need to be up at 5:00. That is soooo early!

In my presentation this weekend, I talked about questioning everything you do in your business, and funny enough, we came home and have been questioning everything. And it's good, but it's also hard, because sometimes you have to say no to the good things, so you can say yes to the great things.

We sort of have all our eggs in one basket over here, so we feel a lot of pressure sometimes to makes the right decisions, and be careful of how we spend our money and time and resources.

And sometimes that means making hard decisions.

Anyways, that's what's going on over here....lots running through my brain. I'm excited about the coming week, and all the people I get to sit down and chat with. It's a busy week when it comes to appointments, and those are the best kind of weeks!

Hoping your Sunday was blessed and beautiful.

SuperStar Director Summit pics

Saturday, September 14, 2013

It feels so good to be typing on the couch in my living room. I got to hug and kiss on Wyatt. Amy said she tried to put him to sleep around 7:15 (which is his normal bedtime), and he just laughed and giggled in his bed for a half hour. I think he knew we were coming home.

Oh I missed that baby so much.

Addy and Luke are at my mom's house having fun with Grammy and Papa. They'll be home tomorrow, and I can't wait to see them too.

There are still so many things on my mind. I have great systems in place for my business, but there are some things that I'm coming home wanting to look more closely at. There are a few things I want to put more focus on again. I'm looking forward to re-aligning my focus this Fall.

I am not adding more to my to do list. I'm happy with how much I'm working right now, but I am excited about refining a few things.

I have pages of notes to review and look over. I'm excited about reviewing information. That's sort of nerdy of me, I know. But I am excited about looking over notes.

My favorite part of the week was reconnecting with friends. I am amazed and so incredibly blessed by the friendships that I have that have come from our Scentsy family. People that I never would have met from all over the country that I know and love and now call my friends, are all in my life because of Scentsy. It's my favorite part of what I do.

Here is a picture re-cap of our week in Boise.

Prepping for our group picture.

Our star (the only pic I got was this blurry one).

They fed us like every 3 hours and we ate like kings! So spoiled.

All the SuperStar director stars in the entry of the new building at the Scentsy campus.

Dinner and music on night 1. Spoiled. Seriously. It felt like we were at a resort.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new building.

A 9 year anniversary celebration and a rainbow.

The location of another new building going up on the Scentsy Family campus.

Another room drop. (This was not the 1st) Love how they make us feel so special.

Tailgate party.

At the Boise State game, and yes, Brian wore his OU shirt.

Another rainbow....at halftime of the game. (After a little rain)

Everyone wanted to head back to the hotel at halftime (at least a lot of us anyways), and Brian volunteered to ride down here.

A late late night with friends. So many laughs. So many memories.

Lunch at the Phoenix airport.

Over OKC. Home sweet home.

Oh and I have a few more pictures to show you.....but not until tomorrow...think new Velata yummies. You'll love it! We do, and I can't wait to share.....tomorrow......

5 little lines

Thursday, September 12, 2013

This has been a crazy 2 days. My brain is on overload.

Luckily, I don't feel like I need to go home and "fix" or "change" too much. What I've been doing the past year feels good, and I'm good with it.

I have a few things I want to start doing. One of those things is documenting my team and my numbers and my daily activities. Some of my sweet friends do this on a pretty spreadsheet, but I decided I needed something I could write on. Krystal Riddle told me about these cool journals called Five Little Lines. It's a simple way to document your day year over year with 5 lines.

I ordered one for my business and then Jana Holcomb told me that she ordered one for her business and for her daughter. What an awesome idea and a great and simple way to document your child's life! I love this idea. I think I need to order 3 more. Also, this would make an awesome baby gift! Don't you think?! And it looks like they'll have custom covers soon.

You can check them out here.

So that's one thing I want to start doing. I'm also really excited to have our directors over this month. We already have a director training planned, and I'm so excited to have them over and share and brainstorm with our leaders. There really is nothing better than relationships.

I also have plans to add a lot more fun into my business and my life thanks to Joel Curtis. I think I'm working on a whole FUN post. Look for that to come soon.

Leadership is Personal

To my SuperStar Director friends.....

The question I hear from the leaders on my team more than any other question is "How do I motivate my team?"

My answer.....You don't.

People do things for their reasons, not yours. If we want to help other people succeed, we have to know their reasons. But when you have 3 small kids, a husband, 11 chickens, a golden retriever, and your own business to run, how to really get to know the people on your team?

It seems overwhelming. I know.

As leaders, our main responsibility is to our frontline and our directors. We are not responsible for them, but we are responsible to them.

Your biggest responsibility is not to motivate them….it is to know them.

It's also important to note before we go any father, that as a leader, you are not normal. Most people do not know how to work for themselves. They don't know how to hold themselves accountable. That's where we come in. More than likely, if you're a SuperStar director, you are self motivated, and you've figured out how to work for yourself. As leaders, we can help our frontline and even our directors learn how to work for themselves, but we have to get to know them first.

A few years ago, after our annual leadership retreat, I walked away feeling like I was trying to take care of too many people and as a result, I really wasn’t taking care of anyone well. That’s when I knew I needed to start focusing on my frontline and my leaders.

But how? I already felt overworked and overtired.

I started by making a list of every single thing I was doing in my business, and I started questioning everything.....why am I doing that? Does that make me money? Is that helping me build my team? Is that necessary?

Question everything you do.

Are you doing something because someone else does it and it works for them? That doesn't mean it works for you.

Are you doing something because you've always done it? That doesn't mean it's effective or a good use of your time, resources, or talents.

I started crossing things off my to do list. I knew I had to make room for relationship building.

I hired an assistant. I created systems. I delegated. And I freed up myself to spend my time, energy, and resources connecting with, getting to know and encouraging the people that I am responsible to.

Leadership is personal.

And somewhere along the way I had made leadership very administrative  I was busy. I was doing a lot of things, but I was missing the boat.

The best leaders are the best relationship builders.

All the fun incentives and pretty things are fun, but what really matters is whether or not you know the people who are helping you grow your business.

People do things for their reasons, not yours (this is why incentives often don’t work).
If you want to motivate people, you have to know their reasons.

So what does that look like? How do we really get to know our frontline?

I have 3 small kids (6, 4, and 10 months), my personal business to run, and a husband to take care of. Oh and 11 chickens and golden retriever. I know you’re busy. We all are.

Remember earlier when I told you to question everything? I mean it. Question everything you are doing in your business. Why are you doing what you’re doing, and is it the best use of your time and talents?

Here’s some food for thought:
You need your people more than they need you. So how are you serving them?

I asked myself all these questions and made some hard decisions about what I wanted my business and home life to look like a couple years ago.

I decided that if I wanted to get to know my frontline, I was going to have to invest a good amount of time getting to know them.

When I look back at the beginning of my business, I know I was successful because of the relationships I had with my frontline….Jacquleyn Roy and Jana Holcomb were some of my earliest recruits, and we were always talking Scentsy. The good, the bad, the ugly, the frustrating, the exciting. We were sharing ideas and thinking outside the box. We all knew why were working and we were able to hold each other accountable.

I realized that I needed to somehow create that for my frontline. I needed to create an environment where my frontline were able to thrive on their own terms, but I was struggling with connecting with and having real conversations with them.

So I started with an email campaign. I sent out this email to all my frontline saying here’s the deal, I feel like I have not done a good job really being there for you, so I want to set aside time every month for us to talk and brainstorm and trouble shoot and set goals. I included times I was available to chat on the phone, or via skype or facetime or meet for coffee or lunch if they were local.

I just knew that so many of my frontline would jump at the chance to hang out with me. Wrong. I think I had 5 people respond (out of over 100). So that's where I started. And I started reaching out to people on a personal level and telling them that I really wanted to give them the time and attention they needed, and these once a month appointments were my plan to do that.

I sent more emails. The more emails I sent out (I sent 2 a month for a while) the more responses I received. People started to realize that I was serious. I made a youtube video that I sent out to them explaining why I wanted to set aside time each month. I also started sending out personalized texts.

I looked last night at my planner and I have between 18 and 25 frontline and directors that I meet with every month.

It has created and fostered relationships that were basically non existent before.

These monthly appointments are a phone appointment, a coffee date, or a lunch date.

I start out every conversation very simply by saying, “So, how are things going?”

These are some of the things we address during our monthly chats:
  •   Get Personal
  • Talk Last month
  • Talk This month
  • Talk Next month
  • Talk about current struggles and offer solutions
  • Create a challenge (if necessary)
  •  Always be working towards a goal
  • Set up your next meeting date

I have a constant running list of the people you are working closely with.

As leaders our job is to create constant, consistent, and ongoing interaction with those people that we are most responsible to.

I realize that this is a very simple concept, but I don’t think we place enough value on it. Sometimes we feel like the administrative tasks are the things we need to be doing, but when we know that our greatest responsibility is to lead our frontline and directors and we know that to lead, we have to have strong relationships, we have to recognize that the time we spend with people is the best time we can spend.

With all that being said, the best way I have found to help my frontline and directors promote is to understand that people will not do things for my reasons, but for theirs, and our responsibility as leaders is to know their reasons and remind them of their reasons on a regular basis.
I have to constantly remind myself that most people don’t know how to work for themselves and my job as a sponsor and a leader is to give them accountability and someone to relate to.

As a leader, your job is to stay out of the way and the lime light and give people the opportunity to succeed. That means that you stay behind the scenes and offer them the support and encouragement they need to find success in their business.

Wishing you relationships and peace tonight.

The Mile High Club

Well I did something tonight in an airplane that I have never done before....

Yep, I blogged. {Get your minds out of the gutter}

As a side note, my husband titled this post and told me what to type for the 1st 2 sentences. He's fun like that.

So I have never blogged from 30,000 feet, that is until today. Who knew you could get wifi on an airplane!? And for $8...worth it just to say I did it.

That's silly I know. I really am on a plane, and I really am writing here so I don't have to finish up my presentation for tomorrow. I'll get it done. I'm just having a hard time bringing it all together. I guess I better figure that out pretty soon.

Here are a few things I'm attempting to work into my presentation...whether they make it or not, these are all good pieces of advice from one of my favorite business books called People Follow You by Jeb Blount.

People need a leader.....that means our job is important and valuable.
Leadership is personal.
The best leaders are the best relationship builders.
You need your people more than they need you.
If you want people to follow you, treat them in a way that will cause them to want to follow you.
Just a few things for you to ponder tonight.....more to come when my presentation is finished and shiny and pretty.

From the air tonight......

Purse Problems and Boundaries

Monday, September 9, 2013

The hardest part about packing?......trying to decide which Grace Adele purse to bring. I would like to admit that I have always been a bit of a purse fanatic. When I sell all my non-Grace Adele purses on Craigslist soon, you'll see what I'm talking about.

And now, purses are a write off, which is a slight problem. I'm definitely going with the stone colored bag...it's the newbie to the group and it needs to welcomed to my purse collection family.

In other news, I'm currently reading/studying/praying through that book up there. It's called Boundaries and it's written by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr John Townsend. It is awesome and challenging and perfect.

If you have trouble saying no, you're overwhelmed, or you just feel like you have too much on your plate in any area of your life, this is a great read. It's easy to read and you can immediately put it's advice into practice. You can find it here. Oh, and everything in it is backed up with scripture. You will love it. My sweet friend, Sarah Matanane is leading us through it in our bible study, and I'm being challenged by it in the best kind of way.

But since tomorrow is Tuesday, I've got to run. Our women's group meets here tomorrow morning, and we fly out to Boise tomorrow night. I've got one more chapter to read tonight, purses and clothes to pack, and so much more.

Happy Monday ya'll.
